What Does A Medicare Agent Do?

As Medicare advisors our job basically consists of 3 things.

#1 Educate

First our job is that of a teacher. We want to explain the basics of Medicare. Explain the timing of when to sign up and how. Then we’ll explain what Medicare doesn’t cover and your options to fill those gaps. You’ll learn why certain people choose a certain type of coverage and common mistakes people make.

Usually this takes the form of a one-on-one meeting where can specifically cover the information you need to know. Often, we’ll meet with new clients transitioning on to Medicare 2-3 times to help ensure they understand everything and feel comfortable with this important transition. We believe you should understand this well enough to make a decision on your own. But of course we hope you choose us to help with your coverage.

#2 Advise and Enroll

Second, our job is to advise on which options can serve you best. This goes beyond explaining the basics, and is where we can truly use our expertise. Depending on your county, you may have over 50 different options for coverage to choose from. 90% of our clients are local, here in northern Indiana and southern Michigan, and we have advised thousands of clients over the years on their options.

Our job is to understand your medical history, prescriptions, doctors, preferences for care, budget, changes happening in the industry, and most importantly your plans for the future. We’ll use specialized programs to find which plan can cover your medications and doctors best. Finally we use the first hand knowledge we’ve gained over decades of serving literally thousands of clients through this exact same transition.

Once we have the right option for you, we’ll help with the paperwork to make it as easy as possible to put your new coverage in place.

#3 Service

After you’ve enrolled, our job transitions to taking care of you down the road. Rather than dealing with some faceless 1800 number our clients can call anytime to get help from someone they know. Often we can spare you from having to call your company directly. And each year, as plans and rules change we’ll be there to help you. Sometimes changes will be needed, and it’s our job to help you understand when and why.

People that sign up directly with an insurance company don’t get the benefit of an agent. We think this is the biggest value we bring to the table. You’ll have a local agent that knows you and your situation to help in the future.
